The Department of Food Processing, Government of Punjab, has convened a meeting on June 19 at the DC office (Amritsar) to advance the process of obtaining a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for the iconic Amritsari kulcha. Apple cultivation expands in Andhra Pradesh with Israeli variety.
Apple production is being evaluated in Andhra Pradesh following the cultivation of a heat-tolerant variety developed in Israel and grown under high-temperature conditions in Anantapur district. Farmer Ramana Reddy established an apple orchard in Kotanka village in the Garladinne mandal of Andhra Pradesh's Rayalaseema region, where summer temperatures can exceed 45°C and rainfall levels are among the lowest in peninsular India.

UP tops India in horticulture output again: Leads in potato, mango, peas
Uttar Pradesh has retained its position as the country's biggest contributor to horticulture production, emerging as the largest producer of potatoes, mangoes and green peas, according to the second advance estimates for 2025-26. The state produced 250.6 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of potatoes, 61.9 lakh MT of mangoes and 37.6 lakh MT of green peas (matar) during the period. At the national level, production stood at 598.8 lakh MT for potatoes, 236.2 lakh MT for mangoes and 72.3 lakh MT for peas.

Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Minister Chander Kumar Chaudhary inaugurated the district-level Kisan Mela at the old vegetable market in Patlikul on Tuesday. He also visited the exhibitions set up by various departments. Addressing the farmers, the minister stated that farming is the primary occupation of the people in the state and the government is committed to directly engaging with farmers to make them economically self-reliant. He emphasised that agriculture is a major industry, with over 70 per cent of the state’s population directly associated with it, while the sector contributes 7 to 8 per cent to the country’s GDP.

India widens trade routes as export surges amid global challenges
India is increasingly using disruptions in international trade as an opportunity by widening import supplies and export markets, a report by Elara Securities stated, adding that this helps the country retain external industry resilience despite a declining rupee, rising oil prices and sluggish global demand. The firm pointed out that although the rupee's steep decline has increased export competitiveness, rising energy costs have also increased import prices. However, India was able to report a current account surplus in April 2026 due to strong services exports and remittance inflows.

India's total exports of goods and services rose nearly 85 per cent in 12 years to $863 billion in 2025-26, driven by strong services growth, IT and GCC expansion. Gulf trade outlook improves for Indian produce exporters
