With 90% of normal area covered, India’s kharif crops sowing up 4% year-on-year. Helped by continuous surplus rains in most parts of the country after mid-June, farmers have covered over 90 per cent of the normal area of about 1,097 lakh hectares (lh) so far in the ongoing kharif season, the Agriculture Ministry said. Experts are hoping for a normal yield, despite some reports of crop damage in some States. UK-India trade deal retains tariffs on poultry and eggs. India has lower animal welfare standards than in the UK, allowing barren battery cages for laying hens – a farming practice that has been banned in the UK since 20212. But the deal includes the Indian government halving tariff reductions on whisky and gin – from 150% to 75% – before reducing them further to 40% by year 10. Indian banks increase scrutiny of exporters after 50% US tariffs. The exporters are facing heavy challenges after the recent imposition of heavy tariffs from the President of the United States Donald Trump. Several banks from India have now increased scrutiny over the new loan applications given by the exporters.
