External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met his counterparts from Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and the Kyrgyz Republic here on Thursday and discussed ways to further boost India’s cooperation with these Central Asian countries. India is hosting the fourth edition of Central Asia Dialogue to forge a closer, wider and stronger partnership with the region, the Ministry of External Affairs said.

India has called for action to address trade distortions caused by non-market economies, non-tariff barriers and restoration of a strong dispute settlement mechanism at the World Trade Organization (WTO), commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said on Wednesday. The minister, however, insisted that one should not jump to the conclusion that an existential crisis has been created at the multilateral trade body.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Kyrgyz Foreign Affairs Minister Zheenbek Kulubaev Moldokanovich on Thursday signed a protocol for enforcement of a bilateral investment treaty to foster bilateral economic relations and encourage cross-border investments between the two nations. The Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) signed on June 14, 2019, in Bishkek, between the Government of India and the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic, enters into force, with effect from June 5, 2025.

The Centre is preparing to roll out e-NAM 2.0, and States may have to make some changes in their Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) Acts. This will be a preparatory step by the Centre to ensure that more inter-State transactions happen over the e-NAM platform. Through hand holding of States, traders are being persuaded to buy though e-NAM. However, it needs many structural reforms required by both the Centre and States to show desired results, experts said.

In a new initiative aimed at streamlining agricultural trade and increasing farmer incomes, corporates have begun directly procuring agricultural produce from farmer producer organisations (FPOs). This development follows the government’s recent strategy of hosting weekly webinars to connect FPOs with major companies. Many FPOs were previously unaware of the possibility of selling their produce directly to companies. The government is optimistic that if these linkages are successfully established, positive results will be seen within a year or two.
