The government has approved procurement of 54,166 tonnes of moong from Haryana, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh at a minimum support price (MSP), along with the procurement of 50,750 tonnes of groundnut from Uttar Pradesh. The procurement of the summer crops of 2025-26 will be undertaken under the central Price Support Scheme (PSS), which is activated when market rates fall below the MSP.

Basmati rice exporters have sustained earnings this marketing year (starting October 2024) on the back of higher export volumes, despite a sharp fall in contracted rates and the absence of a minimum export price (MEP). Trade sources indicate that May’s average basmati export price fell over 23 per cent to $831/tonne from $1,080 a year ago.

India is open to ease the quality control order (QCQ) framework for 'trusted partners', producing good quality products, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal has said. The minister, on a four-day visit to Switzerland and Sweden, said discussions on 90% of content were complete on India-EU FTA, with services and rules of origin negotiations slated to start from Monday. However, he said, key issue to be addressed is non-tariff barriers to make it easy to do business.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal indicated on Wednesday that the Swiss part of the EFTA will possibly be implemented from October 2025, with the other three countries -- Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway-- already having ratified the trade deal. 'Norway, Liechtenstein, and Iceland have reified this agreement. Switzerland's process will last another two and a half months (or so). It is expected that we will be able to implement this in October,' the minister told ANI, during his two-day visit to Switzerland.

Despite a bumper wheat harvest, India has formally notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) that it will not lift restrictions on wheat exports, citing food security concerns for its own population as well as vulnerable and neighbouring countries. In a submission to the WTO’s Committee on Agriculture on Tuesday. circulated on Wednesday, India said its temporary ban on wheat exports, first imposed in May 2022, remains in place due to ongoing volatility in global wheat prices and the need to ensure domestic availability.

Tea exports from India increased by 9.92 per cent at 254.67 million kg, from January to December 2024, against 231.69 million kg in the previous calendar year. According to the latest data released by Tea Board, production in the north Indian estates during calendar 2024 stood at 154.81 million kg, as compared to 141 million kg in the preceding period from January to December 2023, registering a rise of 9.79 per cent year-on-year.

India's rice stocks in government warehouses rose 18% from a year ago to a record high for the start of June, while wheat stocks have hit their highest level in four years on higher procurement from farmers, official data showed on Wednesday. Record rice stocks will help the world's biggest exporter increase shipments, while an improvement in wheat inventories will help the federal government tame any price spikes later this year by increasing open market sales.

India and the EU have closed five chapters including on intellectual property, and customs and trade facilitation of their proposed free trade agreement (FTA) in the 11th round of talks held on May 12-16 in New Delhi. The two sides also discussed the EU's proposal for easing the process of certification under India's Quality Control Orders, especially improvements in online application and accreditation of EU Conformity Assessment Bodies, said an official.
