May 29, 2025 News Image India to reinstate tax refund benefits for exporters from June to boost competitiveness.
India will restore benefits under a key scheme that reimburses exporters for embedded duties, taxes, and levies not covered by any other government refund programme in an effort to boost export competitiveness, the trade ministry said on Tuesday. The benefits under the Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products were introduced on January 1, 2021, but ended on February 5 this year.

India’s agricultural and allied sector exports witnessed a significant increase of 6.47% in the fiscal year 2024-25, reaching $51.91 billion. This growth is particularly noteworthy given that the country’s total merchandise exports remained nearly at the previous year’s level of $437 billion, recording only a marginal increase of 0.1% during the same period. While agricultural exports have surged, they are still below the record high of $53.1 billion achieved in 2022-23. In 2023-24, agricultural exports stood at $48.8 billion.

May 29, 2025 News Image India to emerge as world’s biggest rice producer.
India’s foodgrain production rose by 6% to a record 353.2 million tonne (MT) in the 2024-25 crop year (July-June) compared to previous year because of a significant rise in rice, wheat, pulses and oilseed output, the agriculture ministry said on Wednesday. The country will also outplace China as the world’s biggest rice producer in the year.

Odisha exported a total of 41.35 tonnes of fruits and vegetables to key international markets such as Dubai, London, Birmingham, Rome, Venice, Dublin, France and Belgium during the first two months of 2025-26. Out of the total exports this fiscal, 30.53 tonnes comprises of mangoes — particularly premium varieties such as Amrapalli and Dussehri.

India severing trade ties with Pakistan has brought cheer for Jammu and Kashmir’s walnut industry. On May 2, the Central government announced a blanket ban on the import of goods from Pakistan and shut the Attari-Wagah trade route. Among the affected commodities were dry fruits, including Afghan walnuts, which were being imported into India via Pakistan.

As unrestricted and cheap imports of pulses impact domestic prices and hurt farmers’ realisations, the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) has recommended a ban on yellow pea imports It has also recommended that import duty on pulses such as tur (arhar), lentils and urad should be increased as part of its non-price policy recommendations for the kharif marketing season (KMS) 2025-26 to ensure better prices for the farmers.
