Horticulture crop output rises by 3.66% to 3,677 lakh tonnes in 2024-25: Govt.
India's horticulture crop production is estimated to have increased 3.66 per cent in 2024-25 to 3,677.24 lakh tonnes due to higher output of fruits and vegetables. In 2023-24, the horticulture crops production stood at 3,547.44 lakh tonnes.

Very big deal coming up that would 'open up' India: US President Trump.
While addressing the 'Big Beautiful Event' at the White House on Thursday, US President Donald Trump hinted that a 'very big' deal with India was in the offing. He said, 'We are having some great deals. We have one coming up, maybe with India. Very big one, where we are going to open up India.'

India-UK FTA to include co-equal origin provision; product-specific norms to offer flexibility.
The draft India–UK free trade agreement (FTA) has introduced a 'coequal' rule or product-specific origin norms to offer greater flexibility to specific goods, said people aware of the matter. The rule will allow the producer of a good to meet any of the criteria of origin to claim benefits under the FTA.

'A developed agriculture and prosperous farmers are essential for a developed India' – Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the country is progressing rapidly. India has now become the fourth largest economy in the world. Shri Chouhan emphasized that for a developed India, a developed agriculture sector and prosperous farmers are essential. Under the leadership of PM Modi, efforts are being made to increase agricultural production, reduce costs, compensate for crop losses, ensure fair prices for produce, and promote natural farming.

Basmati export centre coming up in Pilibhit to boost premium production.
Farmers in Pilibhit are preparing to take their high-quality Basmati rice to over 100 countries with support from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). To boost exports and improve local production, APEDA is setting up Uttar Pradesh's second Basmati Export Development Foundation (BEDF) in Pilibhit, following a Rs 10 crore project in Meerut.The move comes after efforts by Union minister of state for commerce and industry Jitin Prasada who is also the MP of Pilibhit.

Centre approves potato research centre in Agra with Rs 111.5 cr assistance.
The Union government on Wednesday approved a proposal to set up the South Asia regional research centre of the International Potato Centre (CIP) in Agra entailing financial support of Rs 111.5 crore. The decision was taken at the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.

US & EU trade pacts to be concluded soon: Nirmala Sitharaman.
The negotiations for a bilateral trade deal with the United States and a free trade agreement with the European Union (EU) are progressing 'really intensely' and should be concluded soon, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said Tuesday. Countering a US-led narrative that India is a 'tariff king,' she said the government has brought down customs duty slabs to eight 'including the zero rate' and that effective rates are much lower than the tariff rate, or the maximum possible tax on imports.

ICRISAT Introduces ‘Rapid-Ragi’ Speed Breeding Protocol to Accelerate Finger Millet Research.
International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) has introduced the world’s first speed breeding protocol for finger millet, a breakthrough that could significantly enhance crop research and food security across Asia and Africa. Named ‘Rapid-Ragi’, the protocol reduces the crop’s typical growing cycle from 100–135 days to just 68–85 days, enabling up to five generations per year, far exceeding the traditional one or two cycles achieved in open fields.

Egypt imports 4.9 M tons of wheat, 4.2 M tons of yellow corn amid regional instability.
The Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture has confirmed the continued smooth flow of strategic commodity imports into the country, despite ongoing regional tensions. Between January 2025 and today, Egypt has successfully imported approximately 4.9 million tons of wheat, 4.2 million tons of yellow corn, and 2.2 million tons of soybeans, according to official data.

Record potato, banana output drives India’s horticulture production to new high.
India’s horticulture production has been estimated to have increased to a new high of 367.72 million tonnes (mt), thanks to potato production surging to a record high of over 60 mt and onion output rising 6.5 mt. Releasing the horticulture production estimated for the 2024-25 crop year ending this month, the Centre said the output of various horticulture crops increased by 3.66 per cent in the current crop year from 354.74 mt in 2023-25. This was made possible due to higher productivity. However, the area under horticulture crops increased increased by less than 2 lakh hectares (lh).
