Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday announced that the state has achieved its highest-ever paddy procurement, clocking an impressive 6.97 lakh metric tonnes (MT) during the Kharif Marketing Season (KMS) 2024–25, significantly surpassing both the government’s target and previous records. Taking to microblogging platform X, CM Sarma stated, 'We are proud to announce the successful conclusion of KMS 2024–25 with a record paddy procurement of 6.97 lakh MT — the highest ever!'

The commerce department is seeking to amend the law governing special economic zones (SEZs), offering several concessions as it seeks to revive the enclaves to boost exports and activity within the economy, according to a TOI report. At a meeting convened by commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal on Monday, the plan discussed with exporters included allowing sales in the domestic tariff area (DTA) - which is the area outside the SEZ - on a duty forgone basis.

New centre is aimed at enhancing food and nutritional security, increasing farmers' incomes, and generating employment by improving the productivity of potato and sweet potato crops, strengthening post-harvest management, and promoting value addition.

India has refused to give in to the US demand for market access in sensitive agriculture sectors, including dairy and GM crops, in the on-going trade negotiations in Washington DC where the two sides are trying to strike an interim deal by the deadline of July 9, sources have said. 'New Delhi has hardened its position on agriculture as it is a redline and it is not possible to meet many demands from the US. If a deal is not struck by July 9, India may face the full brunt of 26 per cent reciprocal tariffs on its exports to the US,' a source tracking the matter told businessline.

As growth in shipments of India’s prized basmati moderates, the Centre is planning to send a delegation to rice-producing nations of Vietnam, Indonesia and Philippines in the coming months to enhance outbound shipments of the commodity, a senior government official said. 'We want to create a market for long-grain basmati in rice-producing nations such as Vietnam because they may be competitors but their rice is different – small grain rice or sticky rice,' the official told Moneycontrol on condition of anonymity.
