In a major initiative to protect and promote the state’s indigenous agricultural wealth, the Tamil Nadu State Agricultural Marketing Board (TNSAMB) has moved to obtain Geographical Indication (GI) tags for five native farm products. The move, announced in the state’s Agriculture Budget 2025-26, is aimed at enhancing the market value of these traditional crops and improving the livelihoods of farmers engaged in their cultivation.

Trade with West Asian nations is crucial for India, considering that nearly two-thirds of its import of crude oil and half its inbound shipment of liquefied natural gas pass through the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has now threatened to close. India’s trade with West Asia is crucial, considering that apart from Russia, it imports crude oil from Iraq, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia. Among the West Asian nations, the majority of India’s trade is with the Gulf Cooperation Council.

India’s merchandise trade with G7 nations reached USD 248 billion in the financial year 2024–25 (FY25), growing at a compound annual rate of 13 per cent since FY21, according to data released by Rubix Data Sciences on Tuesday. Exports to the G7 — comprising the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Canada and Japan — stood at USD 138 billion, while imports were recorded at USD 110 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of USD 28 billion. India maintained a surplus with four of the seven countries: the US, UK, France and Italy.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Thursday the government was interested in doing trade deals with rich countries and democratic allies, as he distanced himself from previous governments’ efforts to explore deals with countries he considered competitors. Mr. Goyal’s comments were made at the India Global Forum 2025 conference, during a conversation with Ian Blatchford at London’s Science Museum.

Global Scotch whisky producers are eagerly eyeing India after New Delhi and London concluded their long-awaited free trade agreement (FTA), as lower tariffs are set to propel sales in the world’s largest market for the popular alcoholic drink. Finalised last month, the deal will lead to India halving its levy on British whiskies and gin from 150 per cent to 75 per cent starting from the middle of next year, and reducing it further to 40 per cent over a 10-year period.
