India may allow duty-free imports of US pulses, particularly lentils and dry peas, under a proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). two people aware of the matter said, amid trade tensions between the two nation. The plan is part of an attempt to keep the US happy and Canada at bay following strained relations with Ottawa. This means a proposed move to impose an import duty on masur (lentils) will impact Canada, one of India’s main suppliers, while sparing the US.

Despite the popular Marayur jaggery fetching Geographical Indication tag, the producers of the product have not been getting much benefits. One of the impeding factors in the produce not having the demand it deserves is the lack of a decentralised processing unit to produce export-quality jaggery. Realising this, the CSIR-National Institute For Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST), Thiruvananthapuram, will establish a processing unit for Marayur jaggery in Kanthalloor.

India’s duty-free import regime of yellow peas has come to an end with no notification being issued for extending the facility, trade sources said. India began allowing duty-free import of the pulse from December 8, 2023, and has been extending it. The last extension, up to February 28, 2025, came on December 25, 2024.

A high-level Belgian delegation led by Princess Astrid – who is from the family of the ruling monarch – is set to begin a week-long programme that would include expansion of trade ties in domains like pharmaceutics, logistics, defence, construction and clean technologies. Belgium’s trade with India is traditionally dominated by the diamond sector. Official meetings of the Belgian delegation are scheduled with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Minister for Trade and Industry Piyush Goyal, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

West Bengal is likely to harvest a bumper potato crop of over 130 lakh tonnes this year, backed by an increase in the area under cultivation and favourable weather. Bengal, the country’s second largest producer of potato, produced around 100 lakh tonnes of the spud last year.
