May 08, 2025 News Image Global rice prices have hit a floor, but India's supply glut will smother any gains.
Global rice prices, which have tumbled to multi-year lows, are unlikely to fall further with top exporter India's currency firming, but bulging Indian stockpiles and a bumper Asian crop will cap any rebound this year, industry executives say. While lower rice prices will benefit price-sensitive consumers in Africa and other regions, they are likely to further squeeze the already meagre earnings of farmers across Asia, which produces nearly 90% of the world's rice.

May 08, 2025 News Image India-Australia: Strengthening Supply Chains in a Disrupted World.
The resurgence of protectionist policies has redefined global trade landscapes. The tariff regimes introduced by the Trump administration—25 percent on Canadian and Mexican imports, 10 percent on Chinese goods, and restrictions on Canadian energy exports—have triggered retaliatory measures. China imposed counter-tariffs on the United States (US) agricultural and aviation exports, while Canada and Mexico responded with tariffs and non-tariff barriers. These trade wars have increased costs across industries—from perishables and metals to energy and intermediaries—adding inflationary pressures across economies. The result is a global reconfiguration of supply chains, compelling businesses to seek alternative trade routes and sourcing strategies.

Every year, thousands of farmers in India face difficulty with hardship owing to unpredictable rainfall and inadequate water supply. In several areas, water for irrigation is becoming scarce, and soil salinity rises because groundwater is being used too extensively. These issues come directly at the expense of rice growers, particularly those in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, and coastal areas of West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. Many farmers have been forced to reduce cultivation or switch to less profitable crops. The stress of farming under such uncertain circumstances has turned agriculture into a hazardous profession. But the need of the hour was clear – a rice variety that would survive and even flourish with less water and poor soil quality. This is where Pusa Rice DST1 comes as a ray of hope.
