Jan 20, 2025 News Image India's exports of food goods jump 11% to $17.8 billion in April-December.
India's exports of agricultural and processed food products registered a robust 11 per cent growth to $17.77 billion during April-December of the current financial year compared to the same period of the previous year, according to official figures. Data compiled by the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS) shows that rice exports in the first nine months of FY25 saw a sharp increase of over 19 per cent to $8.72 billion compared to $6.44 billion in the same period last fiscal.

Commerce and Industry Minister (CIM) Shri Piyush Goyal met with Mr Maroš Šefčovič, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security for a High Level Dialogue from 18-19 January 2025 in Brussels. This was the first in-person meeting between the two leaders, subsequent to the introductory video conference held in December 2024. The dialogue was marked by mutual respect, consideration towards each other's sensitivities and was aimed at setting up a new framework for India-European Union strategic agenda in the area of trade and investments.

Mustard production this year may be lower, but productivity will not be lower than the previous year’s 1.44 tonne per hectare, said P K Rai, Director of the Bharatpur-based Indian Institute of Rapeseed-Mustard Research. He also said that ICAR is in the process of developing short-duration varieties to combat the impact of climate change without compromising on yield. If that happens, it will probably be the world’s shortest duration variety with a high yield.

India and New Zealand should address market access issues for goods, promote collaborations in key sectors, and work on improving connectivity with an aim to boost bilateral trade, which is just USD 1.5 billion, think tank GTRI said on Sunday. Both countries should set a target to double two-way trade within five years by identifying products for early tariff relief and organizing business delegations and roadshows in India, it said.

India is set to allow exports of 1 million metric tons of sugar during the current season, government and industry sources said, to help mills export surplus stocks from the world's second biggest producer of the sweetener and help prop up local prices. The permission to let mills sell 1 million tons of sugar on the world market could put further downward pressure on global sugar prices .
