The cabinet committee on government purchase at a meeting on Thursday approved two separate food ministry proposals to import total one lakh tonnes of rice from India and Pakistan. Presided over by finance adviser Salehuddin Ahmed at the secretariat in the capital Dhaka, the meeting approved a proposal from the food ministry to procure 50,000 tonnes of atap rice from Pakistan under a government-to-government deal with per tonne costing $499.

India’s exports of agricultural and processed food products rose by more than 11% year-on-year to $17.77 billion during April-December of the current financial year, after the government removed most of the restrictions on rice shipments. According to data compiled by the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS), rice exports in the first nine months of FY25 saw a sharp increase of over 19% to $8.72 billion compared to $6.44 billion in the same period last fiscal.

To encourage the use of the rupee and other currencies to settle cross-border transactions, India's central bank took steps to further liberalise regulations under the foreign exchange management act, it said in a release on Thursday. Indian exporters will now be able to open accounts in any foreign currency overseas to settle trade transactions, including receiving export proceeds, and use these proceeds to pay for imports, the Reserve Bank of India said.

The offtake of wheat in the Government’s open market auction through the Food Corporation of India was 94 per cent this week after the weekly offer was raised by 50 per cent to 1.5 lakh tonnes (lt). However, the top bid prices in 13 States were above Rs.3,000/quintal, an indication that more supplies may be needed to help cool prices before procurement starts from April at minimum support price (MSP) of Rs.2,425/quintal.
