India, Japan eye trade boost with nearly 100 MoUs as Modi, Ishiba meet in Tokyo.
The India Japan Annual summit in Tokyo on Friday led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shigeru Ishiba will seek to expand bilateral trade and investment partnership amid prevailing challenges in India-US trade ties and Japan-US trade deal that has also run into turbulence. On Friday an MoU could be signed at the summit on giving a big push to Japanese investments, ET has learnt. Modi will also engage with the Japanese entrepreneurs and investors during his visit. Indian businesses are likely to sign nearly 100 MoUs with their Japanese counterparts during the PM's visit. This is in the backdrop of the headwinds faced by New Delhi and Tokyo following unconventional decisions on trade matters by the US.

In a strategic shift, government eyes exports beyond US.
India is strategically shifting its export focus beyond the US, aiming for diversification due to concerns about over-reliance on specific markets and weaponized supply chains. The government is actively pursuing trade agreements with Europe, exploring opportunities in Africa and CIS countries, and devising strategies for 50 nations to reduce dependence on China and enhance global value chain participation.

Bangladesh: Rice import from India resumes at Benapole land port after 4 months.
After a four-month pause, Bangladesh has resumed rice imports from India through Benapole Land Port. On Thursday night, nine trucks carrying a total of 315 tons of rice entered yard No-31 of the port at around 9:30pm, Shamim Hossain, director of Benapole Port, said on Friday.

India's huge domestic consumption can offset export losses to US: GTRI.
Ajay Srivastava, founder of the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), noted that India can offset the loss of US trade to some extent through increased domestic consumption. The 50 per cent Trump tariffs on India come into effect starting today, posing challenges for the country's US-oriented exporters.

Increasing production and reducing costs essential to make agriculture profitable: Agriculture Minister.
Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, on Wednesday said that while India has become self-reliant in wheat and rice production, cutting farming costs and increasing production are key to making agriculture more profitable. There is a pressing need to lower input costs so that farmers can earn better incomes. Speaking at the 64th All India Wheat and Barley Research Workers' Workshop, Chouhan also emphasised increasing the production of wheat and barley.

Thai rice exports hit by India stock release, rising competition.
Chukiat Opaswong, honorary president of the Thai Rice Exporters Association (TREA), told Thansettakij that India’s planned stock release aims to make room for new-season crops. Much of the rice will be used for ethanol production and poverty alleviation, but part will enter the open market.

US-India relationship ‘complicated’, but ‘at the end of the day we will come together’, says US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
On the day 50 per cent tariffs on Indian goods imported into the US took effect, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the India-US relationship is a 'complicated' one, but added that he believed that 'at the end of the day' the two countries will 'come together'. Speaking to television news channel Fox Business, Bessent suggested that the recent unease in the relationship between New Delhi and Washington was not just due to India’s hefty purchases of Russian oil, but also the delay in the two countries reaching a trade agreement.
