Madurai’s iconic summer cooler, jigarthanda, is a sip away from global fame. An application has been filed with the GI Registry in Chennai seeking a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Madurai jigarthanda, a milk-based delicacy synonymous with the temple city. The application has been jointly submitted by Madurai Famous Jigarthanda Association and Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology. From pushcart beginnings to cult status, Madurai jigarthanda has enthralled people for decades.

India is in 'active dialogue' with the US for a proposed trade deal, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said on Wednesday. He said talks are also on with New Zealand to finalise a trade agreement. Negotiations are also ongoing with the European Union in New Delhi for concluding a free trade agreement (FTA), while a trade pact with Oman is also likely to be reached soon, Goyal said, adding India and Qatar are set to finalise terms of reference for a FTA in the first week of October. India is also in talks with Australia for a second tranche of their bilateral trade pact, the minister said at a FICCI event. 'I say (we are) in active dialogue with the United States of America, with New Zealand. Qatar and I (India) will be finalising the terms of reference, I think, first week of October,' Goyal said. 'Chile, Peru, and frankly (I) have lost track because I am already talking and promising many other nations that we will expedite the discussion...Trade deal with Oman in weeks now,' he said.

Negotiations on the first part of the bilateral trade agreement between India and the US are ongoing and the two sides are satisfied with the movement that has taken place, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said Thursday. 'In February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump instructed us that ministers on both sides should arrive at a good agreement by November,' Goyal told reporters in Patna on Thursday, speaking in Hindi. 'The first part of that agreement, the first tranche, should be finalised by November 2025. Discussions have been going on very seriously since March in a very good environment. Progress is being made, and with the progress, both sides are satisfied.'

India should allow exports of 2 million metric tonnes of sugar in the 2025/26 marketing year starting from October 1 as the country is set to produce surplus, the head of a leading industry body said on Thursday. Sugar mills can divert up to 5 million tonnes of sugar for production of ethanol in the new season, Gautam Goel, president of Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association told an industry conference.

Northern Railway will begin a daily parcel express service between Budgam in Kashmir and Adarsh Nagar in Delhi from Sept. 13, providing a transport option for perishable produce such as apples. Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday said in a post on X that the service would 'empower Kashmir’s apple growers' by improving connectivity following the opening of the Jammu-Srinagar line.
