Amid harvest season, the rice prices have continued to rise, contrary to the expectations of the interim government. To control the prices, the authorities have decided to import 50,000 tonnes of non-basmati parboiled rice from India. The first shipment, which included 24,690 tonnes of parboiled rice from India, arrived at Chattogram Port on December 26. Earlier, the cabinet committee on economic affairs of Bangladesh approved a policy proposal to import 600,000 tonnes of rice from foreign sources in fiscal year 2024-25, on national emergencies and public interest.

In the first high-level bilateral engagement with the Taliban regime, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met Afghanistan acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in Dubai Wednesday. So far, an Indian official, at the level of Joint Secretary, had been meeting Taliban ministers, including Muttaqi, and Defence Minister Mohammad Yaqoob. But Misri’s meeting is an upgrade, signalling high-level official engagement from the Indian government.

The Bangladesh interim government has approved import of 50,000 tonnes of non-basmati parboiled rice from India to meet the domestic demand, a decision which demonstrates that the trade relationship between the two neighbours remains uninterrupted despite the recent chill in diplomatic ties. The proposal on rice import was approved by the committee on govt purchase on Tuesday and a private Indian company will supply it to Bangladesh as the lowest bidder, according to sources. Importing 50,000 tonnes of rice at a price of $ 458.84 per tonne will cost $ 22,942,000 (around Rs 197 crore or Tk 280 crore).

The country's organic products' exports have the potential to jump over three-fold to Rs 20,000 crore in the next three years, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Thursday. He said this while releasing the eighth edition of the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) with new regulations aimed at enhancing clarity and transparency in organic product standards as well as aligning with global standards.

Indian exporters have huge opportunities to increase their share in the global agriculture trade from the current 2.4 per cent, a government official said on Wednesday. The global agriculture trade is about $2 trillion. Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) Chairman Abhishek Dev said that given these numbers, 'huge opportunities' are there to increase exports from the country.
