Potato cultivation in Tripura dates back to the 17th century when European traders introduced it. However, the first major expansion occurred between 1940 and 1947, with the State adopting popular varieties like up-to-date Lalit, Kufri Jyoti and Kufri Sindhuri.

Under the open tender agreement, a total of 4.5 lakh tonnes of rice is being imported from India in nine packages. Of this, around 2.97 tonnes have already arrived in the country, according to a press release from the Ministry of Food issued today (27 March). The sample testing of the rice on the vessel has been completed, and unloading operations will commence soon. Necessary preparations have been made to facilitate the process, the press release said.
