Rabi sowing area to exceed last year level: Agriculture Secretary
The government expects total area coverage under rabi (winter) crops like wheat to exceed the previous year's 655.88 lakh hectares, Agriculture Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi said on Monday. "Rabi sowing is higher than last year's progress. There was a lot of rain. And in some areas because of the late harvesting, it's a bit delayed. But we hope that we will cover the rabi higher than last year," he told reporters on the sidelines of an event here.

India’s wheat sowing up 19% as overall rabi crops acreage gains 12%
Data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare showed that the overall acreage was up at 306.31 lakh hectares (lh) compared with 272.78 lh a year ago. The normal coverage of rabi crops is 637.81 lh. By this weekend, at least 50 per cent of this normal coverage is expected to be completed. There are two reasons for the higher rabi coverage. One is the good soil moisture with rain under the South-West monsoon continuing in October and the North-East monsoon bringing surplus rainfall until a hiatus in the first fortnight of November.

India-Israel FTA talks: Strategic sectors must take centre stage over merchandise trade, says GTRI
India and Israel have revived negotiations for a long-pending Free Trade Agreement (FTA), nearly a decade after the last formal talks stalled, with experts saying the emphasis should be on strategic collaboration rather than merchandise trade. The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) on Monday said that India–Israel trade remains modest, and the renewed push should focus on areas such as defence manufacturing, electronics, semiconductors, water and irrigation technology, precision agriculture, cybersecurity, and frontier R&D.“For both countries, therefore, the value of the renewed FTA effort lies less in merchandise trade and more in strategic cooperation -- in defence manufacturing, electronics, semiconductors, water and irrigation technology, precision agriculture, cybersecurity, and frontier R&D,” GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said.

Commerce Secretary Engages with Industry Stakeholders to Address Key SEZ Policy and Operational Challenges
Representatives from Special Economic Zone (SEZ) units and developers highlighted issues related to Special Economic Zone(SEZ)– Domestic Tariff Area (DTA) transactions, duty foregone, ICEGATE connectivity constraints, import monitoring systems, and reverse job work challenges faced by MSMEs. IT/ITES stakeholders raised concerns over rules on vacant built-up area classification, timelines for renewal of Letters of Approval (LoA), and procurement attestation requirements that differ from GST norms.Participants also drew attention to the lack of parity for SEZ units under concessional import duty and duty drawback schemes available to DTA units, operational inefficiencies introduced by the new Procurement Certificate process, countervailing duties imposed by the US, and the need to review QCO applicability for SEZ-to-DTA sales, particularly in cases such as KASEZ.
