Plant protection a thorn in boosting India, Russia agricultural trade.
India and Russia are looking to expand their cooperation in trade and education in the agriculture sector by removing some bottlenecks, but given the resistance to move forward with suitable reforms, it may take time to reach some agreements. As Russia has been insisting on earmarking a pest-free zone for enabling more exports, India has been arguing it should be based on testing of products for pests. Several agri products like potato, pomegranate, fisheries and dairy items have been identified by India where there is scope for expansion. The Russian side wants exports of products only from pest-free zones, so that those are better monitored, the sources said.

India’s first Europe-facing trade pact comes into effect on October 1.
India is set to formally operationalise its trade agreement with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) bloc on October 1, marking the country’s first-ever trade pact with a European grouping. The government will host a high-profile launch event at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, senior ministers from the EFTA nations, government officials, and industry representatives in attendance, as per a Business Standard report.

India is negotiating free trade agreements (FTAs) with a number of countries including the US, New Zealand, Oman, Peru, Chile and the EU, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said Monday. He also said the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) between India and four-nation European Free Trade Association (EFTA) will come into force from October 1. It was signed on March 10, 2024.

Russia eyes more sunflower oil exports to India.
Russia, the world's top sunflower oil producer, aims to increase exports to India, seeking to replace Ukrainian supplies that are being redirected to Europe, the state agricultural export agency said on Friday. The United States continues to play hardball with India over trade and tariffs as the American commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, pointedly said on Sunday: 'If you want to sell to the US consumer, right, you've got to play ball with the President of the United States.' India, Russia discuss BRICS grain exchange plan to boost agriculture trade ties.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev in New Delhi on Thursday (September 25, 2025) and discussed plans of creating a common agricultural food exchange that will help in boosting agriculture trade among the BRICS member-countries. Mr. Modi conveyed his greetings to President Vladimir Putin saying he is looking forward to welcoming him for the 23rd India-Russia annual summit to be hosted here later this year.

Honourable PM said, 'World Food India has emerged as the event of context, content, and creativity'.
The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, inaugurated the fourth edition of World Food India 2025 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi on 25th September 2025. Organized by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, this flagship global event once again positioned India as the “food basket of the world” and reinforced its leadership in food processing. The Prime Minister visited the exhibition pavilion at World Food India and expressed satisfaction at the emphasis on nutrition, reducing oil consumption, and enhancing the health aspects of packaging.
