US and EU close in on 15% tariff deal: Report
The EU and US are closing in on a trade deal that would impose 15 per cent tariffs on European imports, which could be similar to the agreement made with Japan, reported the Finance Times. As per the FT report, Brussels could agree to the so-called reciprocal levies to avoid the US President’s threat to raise them to 30 per cent from August 1.

PM Modi reaches UK; likely to seal FTA
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday reached the UK with the formal signing of the landmark India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) expected to be the key outcome of his two-day trip. Modi will hold wide-ranging talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday. Starmer will host Modi at Chequers, the British prime minister's official country residence near London. Commerce minister Piyush Goyal is likely to sign the FTA alongside his UK counterpart Jonathan Reynolds after three years of intense negotiations. The UK views the deal as its biggest trade win since Brexit and hopes it will inject fresh momentum into research and technology partnerships with India.

GI tag sought for Ramanathapuram's Mugavai Kuliyadichan red rice.
The Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST), an autonomous organisation under the state higher education department, has filed an application with the Geographical Indications Registry, seeking geographical indication (GI) tag for Mugavai Kuliyadichan Sivappu Arisi (Mugavai Kuliyadichan Red Rice). The GI tag is expected to promote the rice variety, boost its market value, and preserve its unique identity.

India-U.S. trade deal: Deadlock over agri continues, but Trump surprise not ruled out.
With the August 1 deadline approaching, agriculture continues to loom large as an impediment to a trade deal between India and the U.S. India continues to hold firm against opening up the sector to imports to protect Indian farmers, and the U.S. remains keen that the sector be opened up as such a deal would set the precedent for future deals it strikes with the EU and Japan.

India and Maldives discussing free trade agreement, investment pact.
India and the Maldives are in discussions to negotiate a free trade agreement and an investment treaty, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri told reporters on Tuesday. The countries are also discussing new areas of cooperation, including in renewable energy, Misri said.

World's Largest Grain Storage Plan in Cooperative.
Government on 31.05.2023, has approved the 'World’s Largest Grain Storage Plan in Cooperative Sector', and it has been rolled out as a Pilot Project. The Plan entails creation of various agri infrastructure at PACS level, including godowns, custom hiring centers, processing units, Fair Price Shops, etc. through convergence of various existing schemes of the Government of India (GoI), such as, Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF), Agricultural Marketing Infrastructure Scheme (AMI), Sub Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM), Pradhan Mantri Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises Scheme (PMFME), etc.

Cold Storage Facilities for Perishable Crops.
Government is implementing various schemes under which financial assistance is available for setting up of cold storage for perishable horticultural produce throughout the country. Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare is implementing Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) under which financial assistance is provided for various horticulture activities including Construction/Expansion/ Modernization of cold storages of capacity up to 5000 MT in the country on the basis of Annual Action Plan (AAP) received from States/UTs. The component of Cold Storage is demand/entrepreneur driven for which Government assistance in the form of credit linked back ended subsidy is available at the rate of 35% of the project cost in general areas and 50% of the project cost in North Eastern & hilly States and scheduled areas through respective State Horticulture Missions.

Initiatives to Promote Organic and Climate Smart Farming.
Organic farming is being promoted through Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) in all the States/UTs except North Eastern States and Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER) for the North Eastern States. Both schemes stress on end-to-end support to farmers engaged in organic farming i.e. from production to processing, certification and marketing. Primary focus of the schemes is to form organic clusters, with preference to small and marginal farmers, to create a supply chain. Both schemes are also promoting natural resource based integrated and climate resilient sustainable farming systems, natural resource conservation and on-farm nutrient recycling. Both the schemes are implemented through States /UT Governments.

Maize acreage up 15% till July 21, seen heading for a new high as farmers expand area.
As more farmers eye maize crop, the planting of the coarse cereal crop has seen an increase of 15 per cent across the country till the third week of July. Per the Agriculture Ministry data as of July 21, maize has been planted on nearly 71.21 lakh hectares (lh) this year compared to 61.73 lakh hectares during the same period last year.

India, US BTA not signed yet, 5 rounds of talks held: Govt to Parliament.
India and US are negotiating a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) which has not been signed as yet and five rounds of negotiations have been held till now, the government informed Parliament on Tuesday. The BTA negotiations were launched in March 2025.
