Asia Rice: Strong rupee lifts Indian prices despite tepid demand.
Indian rice prices climbed to a near one-month high this week, bolstered by an appreciation in the Indian rupee despite tepid demand, while Thai rice prices remained steady due to low demand and abundant supply. India's rice prices for 5% broken parboiled variety was quoted at $390-$397 per ton, up from the last week's $389-$396. Indian 5% broken white rice was priced at $383 to $390 per ton this week.

India slaps 20% export duty on parboiled, milled rice for food safety
The Ministry of Finance has imposed a 20 per cent export duty on parboiled rice and specific milled rice varieties, with the new rule taking effect from May 1. The decision is aimed at regulating rice exports and ensuring domestic food security, according to a Financial Express report. According to the circular issued by the ministry, the export duty applies to parboiled rice—including GI-recognized and other varieties—and “Other Rice” under specific customs classifications. This includes semi-milled or wholly milled rice, whether or not polished or glazed.

To complete London trade Bridge, Piyush Goyal set to visit UK again soon
Shri Piyush Goyal Ji arrived in the UK on Monday for two days where he met UK secretary of state for trade and business Jonathan Reynolds to advance the FTA negotiations. On Tuesday he met chancellor of exchequer Rachel Reeves. On Wednesday, he was in Norway and on Thursday he is scheduled to be in Brussels to meet the EU leadership. Goyal's return to the UK is expected on Friday or Saturday. An announcement on the signing of the FTA and two other pacts - bilateral investment agreement (BIT) and social security pact (officially dubbed as the Double Contribution Convention Agreement) - could be made then.

India may export up to 8 lakh tons of sugar this season: Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra
India, the world's leading sugar producing country, may export up to 8 lakh tones of sugar, lower than the permitted quota of 10 lakh tones in the 2024-25 season ending September, a top government official said on Thursday .So far, the country has shipped 3 lakh tones of sugar and about 60,000 tones is at ports for shipment, a senior food ministry official said. Addressing a press conference, Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said, We will export 8 lakh tones out of the total quota permitted.

Piyush Goyal concludes historic Norway visit, focuses on strengthening trade ties
In a social media post shared on Thursday, Goyal said, Concluded my productive visit to Norway, the first by a Commerce and Industry Minister from India in over 25 years. My engagements with the political and business leadership in the country give me immense confidence that our ties are set to enter a new phase of trust and growth. During his visit, Goyal met Cecilie Myrseth, Norway's Minister of Trade and Industry. The two leaders held discussions on enhancing trade relations in line with the recently signed India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA). They also explored new opportunities to boost bilateral cooperation in various sectors.

Union Minister Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia Holds Investor Interactions in Mumbai; Ambani, Birla, Tata Express Interest in Northeast Region
Union Minister Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia emphasized the Government of India’s strategic vision to position the Northeast as a new growth engine for the country. “The goal is to integrate the eight states into one unified development goal as India’s growth engine,” he said. He also underlined the role of public-private partnerships in accelerating sustainable development in the region. The Minister further shared with the industrialists some of the key initiatives undertaken by MDoNER, which included the formation of a High-Level Task Force with the Chief Ministers of all eight Northeastern states, the establishment of Investment Promotion Agencies (IPAs) in each state, among others.
