Soaring prices, empty shelves as Japan’s rice crisis worsens.
Rice is a staple in Japanese culture and cuisine, so much so that the word for 'meal' is synonymous with 'cooked rice.' But demand for the grain is rapidly outstripping supply, causing prices to soar, and the country is now taking the rare steps of releasing rice from its emergency stockpile and turning to imports.

Commerce Secretary Shri Sunil Barthwal Engages with Croatian Counterparts to Strengthen Bilateral Economic Cooperation.
Commerce Secretary, Government of India, Shri Sunil Barthwal, visited the Republic of Croatia from 22–23 April 2025, where he held bilateral discussions with Mr. Zdenko Lucić, State Secretary for Foreign Trade and Development, Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, and Mr. Ivo Milatić, State Secretary, Ministry of Economy. The meetings focused on advancing India-Croatia trade and investment relations, promoting sectoral collaboration, and reinforcing India’s engagement with the Central European region.

Centre raises wheat procurement target to over 32 million tonnes.
The Indian government has raised the wheat procurement target in Madhya Pradesh by 1 million tonnes (mt) to 7 mt this year in view of higher yield. Harvest has been completed across the central Indian State. The all-India target of wheat now stands revised at 32.27 mt as no change has been made for other States. The all-India daily procurement is also more than 1 mt now, which shows that the agencies made good preparation to procure as much wheat as possible, said an official source.

Commerce Secretary, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India,Shri Sunil Barthwal, visited the Netherlands from 24–26 April 2025 to advance bilateral trade and economic cooperation between India and the Netherlands. The visit underlined India’s commitment to strengthening its economic engagement with the Netherlands, a key European partner. During his visit, Mr. Barthwal engaged in high-level discussions, industry interactions and toured places of economic importance.

Pakistani exporters to move government against Qatar’s India-only rice tender.
Pakistani rice exporters said on Saturday they would send a letter to Qatar on Monday through the ministry of commerce and the Trade Development Authority to complain about an India-specific basmati rice import tender, which local traders have called a discriminatory move by the Qatari government. Earlier this year, Qatar lifted a ban, imposed since 2011-12, on the import of rice from Pakistan, thus allowing Islamabad to export 4,000 metric tons or 100,000 bags of basmati rice to Doha.

Telangana and Tamil Nadu clock highest growth in exports in FY25.
As India strengthens its exports of non-petroleum and non-gems & jewellery products, the Southern states are emerging as the country’s export hubs. Gujarat and Maharashtra continue to be top merchandise exporters but both states posted a decline in their FY25 exports, as per analysis of state-wise exports in the National Import-Export Record for Yearly Analysis of Trade (NIRYAT).

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, who is in London on a two-day visit, focused on bilateral trade and investment ties during his interaction with a range of senior business leaders to explore the potential for greater collaborations with the UK. After a meeting with UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds to advance the ongoing Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations, Goyal held talks with Revolut Chair Martin Gilbert with a fintech focus and De Beers Group CEO Al Cook with a focus on 'global trends in the gems and jewellery sector' on Monday.

India, Netherlands discuss ways to address trade barriers, logistics issues.
India and the Netherlands have discussed ways to advance strategic economic cooperation, foster policy alignment and address trade barriers to facilitate smoother market access for Indian and Dutch businesses. The issues were taken up during commerce secretary Sunil Barthwal’s visit to Netherlands from April 24–26 April to advance bilateral trade and economic cooperation between the two sides.

Govt collating data of indirect exports of Indian goods to Pakistan from third countries: Sources.
The government is collating data to figure out the quantum of indirect exports of Indian goods to Pakistan from third countries in a bid to check such rerouting of shipments to the neighbouring country, sources said. The government is working with the industry to look into alternate routes for shipments of goods through air route in the backdrop of Pakistan closing its air space for Indian carriers, they said.

India prepares ground to curb GM alfalfa seed import as US seeks market access.
With the US pushing India to reduce import duty on alfalfa (lucerne) fodder seed, the government is preparing the ground for restricting the genetically modified (GM) version of the crop from entering the country. The Americans grow both GM and non-GM varieties of alfalfa, which derives its name from the Arabic world al-fasfasa that means the best forage.
