Tamil Nadu govt. to apply for GI tag for tamarind from Dharmapuri.
The Tamil Nadu government will take steps to explore the possibility of getting a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for a tamarind variety from Pennagaram in Dharmapuri district, Minister T.M. Anbarasan said in the Assembly on Tuesday (April 22, 2025). Listing the requirements for obtaining a GI tag for a product, the Minister said Tamil Nadu ranked second among the States, with 69 GI tags.

India big buyer of pulses this year.
'The surge in imports is largely attributed to higher domestic demand, inconsistent production levels in key pulse-growing regions and the Indian government’s continued efforts to stabilize prices by increasing the supply through imports,' he said in a recent article he wrote for the Global Pulse Confederation (GPC). Yellow pea imports are forecast at 2.04 million tonnes, chickpeas at 1.31 million tonnes and lentils at 1.29 million tonnes.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday said India is 'actively engaging' with the new US administration and hopes to conclude the first tranche of the bilateral trade agreement 'positively' by fall (September-October) this year. 'We are one of the countries which is actively engaged with the new administration of the United States of America to see how best we can get a bilateral trade agreement done,' she said during an interaction with the Indian diaspora here.

India should restore soybean exports to US in bilateral trade talks: SEA.
India should prioritise reviving exports of organic non-GMO soybean and soybean meal to the United States during ongoing Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) negotiations, industry body Solvent Extractors Association (SEA) said on Monday. India previously exported 150,000-200,000 tonnes of organic, non-GMO soybean products to the US before safeguard duties imposed after opposition from domestic US producers effectively halted this trade, according to SEA.

India's oilmeal export up 3% on year in March.
The Solvent Extractors Association of India (SEA) has come out with the export data for export of oilmeals for the month of March, 2025 provisionally reported at 409,148 tons compared to 395,382 tons in March, 2024 i.e. up by 3%. The overall export of oilmeals during Apr.24 to Mar.25 in term of quantity reported at 4,342,498 tons compared to 4,885,437 tons during the same period of last year i.e. down by 11%, mainly due to reduction in export of rapeseed meal & castorseed meal and in term of Free on board (FOB) Value decreased to Rs.12171.0 crores from Rs. 15368.0 crores, down by 21%.

Indian rice trade wants export price to Bangladesh increased.
The interim government in Bangladesh has allowed exports of aroma rice after a year-and-a-half, leading to a section of Indian exporters demanding that New Delhi hike it rice shipment prices to Dhaka. 'After 7 years, the Bangladesh government has given a quota to export its special rice variety, which could affect Indian speciality rice varieties such as Sona Masuri, Jeera Kasala and premium non-Basmati rice,' said a New Delhi-based exporter.
