Rising US costs may prompt China to divert goods to India; Govt sets up monitoring cell.
The government has set up an inter-ministerial import surge monitoring group as high tariffs on certain countries like China and Vietnam may lead to diversion of goods to India, the commerce ministry said. It also said that Chinese retaliatory tariffs on US goods could further increase the inflow of US agricultural products into India.

Haryana to join hands with Israel to pioneer agriculture and horticulture growth.
Recently, at the Centre of Excellence for Vegetables, Indo-Israel Project, at Gharounda, Karnal, Haryana Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shyam Singh Rana met with a high-level Israeli team. Collaboration in contemporary horticultural methods was the primary focus. The Israeli team was then invited by Rana to demonstrate the technologies that the center has been developing over the past 14 years. The minister added that since hydroponics and aeroponics utilize less land and water, we need Israel’s assistance in promoting these cutting-edge farming technologies.

Goods exports up 0.7%, trade gap widens.
India's merchandise exports grew 0.7% on-year to $41.97 billion in March, taking overall FY25 goods exports to $437.42 billion, 0.08% higher than FY24, data released Tuesday showed. A steeper rise in imports at 11.3% sharply widened the trade deficit in March to $21.54 billion compared to $14 billion in February.

Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, is leading the Indian delegation to the 15th BRICS Agriculture Ministers' Meeting (AMM), scheduled to be held on 17th April, 2025 in Brasilia, Brazil. The theme of 15th BRICS AMM is 'Promoting Inclusive and Sustainable Agriculture through Cooperation, Innovation, and Equitable Trade among BRICS Countries'. Agriculture Ministers and senior officials from BRICS member countries, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Iran are expected to attend the Meeting.

India Eyes Stronger Western Trade Ties Amid Shifting U.S. Policy, Says Jaishankar.
India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said the global economic landscape is shifting, and India is moving swiftly to deepen its trade relationships with open-market Western economies, following years of policy uncertainty sparked by tariffs and global protectionism. Speaking at the Carnegie Global Technology Summit 2025 in New Delhi, Jaishankar emphasized that former U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs — including a 26% levy on Indian goods — forced India to reassess its openness to the global economy and rethink its long-term trade strategy.

India hosts 8th Meeting of Joint Committee on ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA).
India hosted the 8th meeting of the AITIGA Joint Committee to review the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) at Vanijya Bhawan, New Delhi, from April 07 to 11, 2025. The event was conducted in a hybrid format. The meeting was co-chaired by Shri Rajesh Agrawal, Additional Secretary, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, India and Deputy Co-Chair Dr. Sugumari S. Shanmugam Senior Director Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, Malaysia. The meeting saw participation from delegates representing ASEAN countries, including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam.

Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and Government of Arunachal Pradesh hosts International Conclave cum Buyer-Seller Meet at Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh.
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) in collaboration with the Government of Arunachal Pradesh, hosted an International Conclave cum Buyer-Seller Meet (IBSM) at Kalawangpo Convention Hall in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh to promote agricultural and processed food products exports from Arunachal Pradesh and the broader North-Eastern Region (NER) of India. In his keynote address, the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Shri Pema Khandu committed to developing the agricultural & allied sectors, enhancing farmer’s livelihoods, empowering Self-Help Groups and encouraged women led development. He envisions enhancing agri-exports of GI tagged Khaw Tai Rice (known as Khamti Rice), Mandarin Orange, Kiwi, Apple, Persimmon, Yak Cheese (Churpi), amongst others to South East Asian and ASEAN Countries. He encouraged domestic and international buyers to be a boon for the state and invest in the state’s untapped potential.

A 'zero-for-zero' tariff strategy under the proposed bilateral trade agreement between India and the US is unlikely, as the two countries are at different levels of economic development, official sources said. Certain trade experts have suggested that India can propose a 'zero-for-zero' tariff strategy to the US for addressing America's reciprocal tariff hikes.

India finds a place in EU's expanding €2 trillion trade playbook as bloc's ties with US sour.
The European Union is racing to clinch trade deals with countries around the world in an effort to diversify away from an increasingly protectionist US as officials worry that the transatlantic relationship has been irreversibly damaged. The bloc’s chief trade negotiator, Maros Sefcovic, will travel to Washington on Monday to lobby for a reduction in the tariffs President Donald Trump imposed on €380 billion ($432 billion) of the bloc’s exports.
