India is actively involved in the discussions with the US on the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) with an aim to expand trade and investment, Parliament was informed on Tuesday. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada said India-US bilateral trade agreement negotiations were launched in March 2025.

The Union Government, under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), provides support for setting up of Centres of Excellence (CoEs) for fruits and vegetables in collaboration with various stakeholders including bilateral partners. The Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in horticulture are established with the aim of serving as hubs for demonstration, training, and dissemination of the latest technologies in horticultural production by promoting capacity building, production of planting material and adoption of new technologies in horticulture sector. The primary objective of CoEs is to transfer knowledge and practical skills to farmers, entrepreneurs, and extension workers, thereby enhancing productivity, quality, and sustainability in the horticulture sector. By showcasing modern innovations and providing hands-on training, CoEs play a vital role in bridging the gap between research and field-level adoption. Government of India has entered into bilateral cooperation agreement with Israel, Netherlands, New Zealand for establishment of CoEs. Besides, CoEs are also established with technical assistance from Indian Research Institutes.

The government has reiterated that the livelihood interests of Indian farmers remain paramount for it while negotiating trade agreements with international partners, including the US. Replying to a question on the Indo-US trade deal in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Ramnath Thakur, Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, said India is actively involved in discussions on the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), which aims at expanding trade and investment and deepening the US-India trade relationship to promote growth that ensures fairness, national security and job creation, especially in labour-intensive sectors, including agricultural products.

Gujarat retained its position as India's top exporting state in 2024-25, with outbound shipments worth Rs 9.83 lakh crore, accounting for 26.6 per cent of the country's total exports, FIEO said on Tuesday. It said despite a marginal dip from the previous year, Gujarat's exports remained significantly ahead of all other states, nearly Rs 4.3 lakh crore more than Maharashtra (Rs 5,57,271 crore), the second-ranked state.

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved a total outlay of Rs 6520 crore including additional outlay of Rs 1920 crore for ongoing Central Sector Scheme Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana, (PMKSY) during 15th Finance Commission Cycle (FCC) (2021-22 to 2025-26). Approval includes, Rs 1000 crore to support setting up of 50 Multi Product Food Irradiation Units under the component scheme-Integrated Cold Chain and Value Addition Infrastructure (ICCVAI) and 100 Food Testing Labs (FTLs) with NABL accreditation under the component scheme – Food Safety and Quality Assurance Infrastructure (FSQAI) of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY), in alignment with the budget announcement and, Rs 920 crore, for sanctioning projects under various component schemes of PMKSY during the 15th FCC.

India’s widening trade deficit with China, which hit a record $99.2 billion in FY 2024-25, has been a persistent cause of concern for the country. The trends reflect not just rising imports but, more crucially, India’s stagnant exports to China. Over the past decade, India’s exports to China have grown by only 19.2%—rising from $12 billion in FY 2015 to $14.3 billion in FY 2025 (Figure 1). This growth has been limited in both value and product diversification, placing India a distant 34th among China’s import sources, far behind major trade partners, such as South Korea, Taiwan, and the US, which command a substantial share of China’s imports.

India is looking to unveil a Rs.20,000 crore long-term plan by September to shield its exporters from global trade uncertainties and fluctuations, officials said. A raft of measures aimed at facilitating easy access to export credit and tackling non-tariff barriers in overseas markets are being planned under the new Export Promotion Mission, the officials said.
