The Union Government, under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), provides support for setting up of Centres of Excellence (CoEs) for fruits and vegetables in collaboration with various stakeholders including bilateral partners. The Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in horticulture are established with the aim of serving as hubs for demonstration, training, and dissemination of the latest technologies in horticultural production by promoting capacity building, production and supply of planting material to potential farmers and adoption of new technologies in horticulture sector.

Following the India-UK free trade agreement (FTA), India’s brown rice exports to the United Kingdom are expected to rise, potentially pushing its market share beyond the current 45 per cent. However, this growth hinges on Indian exporters’ ability to adhere to the UK’s stricter Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) standards, as the country is preparing to adopt quality norms similar to those of the European Union (EU).

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), in collaboration with the Union Territory Administration of Ladakh and Fair Exports (India) Pvt. Ltd., has successfully flagged off the maiden export consignment of fresh Halman Apricots from Ladakh to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar.

Negotiations for a comprehensive trade deal between India and Oman, which commenced in 2023, have been concluded. 'India-Oman CEPA negotiations have been concluded,' Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada informed Rajya Sabha in a written reply this week while responding to a question from Congress member Hebi Mather Hisham relating to India's trade deals.

10,000 Farmers Producer Organization (FPOs) have been registered under the Central Sector Scheme for 'Formation and Promotion of 10,000 Farmer Producer Organizations'. Each FPO registered under the Scheme is provided Rs.18 lakh as management cost over 3 years, matching equity grant of upto Rs.15 lakh per FPO (@Rs.2000/- per farmer) and credit guarantee facility upto Rs.2 crore for project loan from eligible lending institutions.

The government has shortened the tender submission period for importing 4 lakh tonnes of rice, according to a decision of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs today. The move is intended to build up public food stocks and contain the price of the staple in the local market.

08 Aug, 2025 News Image R&D Initiatives for Developing Food Processing Technologies.
The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) does not undertake Research and development work on its own. However, MoFPI is implementing a Research and Development Scheme, which is a part of Human Resource & Institutions Scheme under the umbrella scheme i.e. Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY). Under the scheme, financial assistance as Grant-in-aid is given to various Universities, IITs, Central/ State Government Institutions, Government funded organizations, R&D laboratories and CSIR recognized R&D units in private sector to promote and undertake demand driven R&D work in food processing sector. The objective of the scheme is to benefit food processing industry in terms of product and process development, efficient technologies, improved packaging, value addition etc. with commercial value along with standardization of various factors viz. additives, colouring agents, preservatives, pesticide residues, chemical contaminants, microbiological contaminants and naturally occurring toxic substances within permissible limits.

The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) is implementing a Central Sector Umbrella scheme 'Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY)'. As on 30.06.2025, under the various component schemes of PMKSY, 1601 projects have been approved and Grant-in-aid of Rs. 6411.61 Crores has been disbursed/released to these projects.
