Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Tuesday his country aims to triple trade flows with India from $12 billion last year "in the short term," without giving a more specific time frame. Speaking alongside Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi after a state visit in Brasilia, Lula also said Brazilian planemaker Embraer (EMBR3.SA), opens new tab wants to strengthen its presence in India, partnering with companies there.

09 Jul, 2025 News Image Digital Platforms Driving Efficiency and Accountability in Agricultural Schemes, says Agriculture Secretary Dr Devesh Chaturvedi.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare (Mechanization & Technology Division) organized a one-day national workshop on the Implementation of the Online Centralized Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) Platform Version 2.0 and the NaMo Drone Didi Yojana in New Delhi today. The event was graced by Dr. Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary, DA&FW, Dr. Pramod Kumar Meherda, Additional Secretary, and Smt S. Rukmani, Joint Secretary (M&T). The workshop was attended by the officers from the Central Ministries, Stare Agriculture & Rural Development Departments and the Lead Fertilizer Companies. The Secretary inaugurated the workshop and unveiled the Crop-Specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for application of various forms of soil and plant nutrients using drones in agriculture. These SOPs will provide scientific guidance and uniformity in drone operations across the country.

India is actively negotiating bilateral investment treaties (BITs) with over a dozen countries, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Israel, Oman, European Union, Switzerland, Russia, and Australia, a government official said. Besides these nations, talks are underway with Tajikistan, Cambodia, Uruguay, Maldives, Switzerland, and Kuwait.

Indian Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday pledged to ensure maize farmers receive a fair price for their produce. Emphasising the critical need for crop diversification in Punjab and Haryana, he stated that the government aims to expand maize cultivation, targeting a significant increase in production from the current 42.28 million tonnes (mt) to 86 mt by 2047. However, he made it clear that this productivity boost must occur without the use of genetic modification technology.

In a move aimed at strengthening regional cooperation in the livestock and poultry sectors, the CLFMA of India in association with the Sri Lanka Veterinary Association (SLVA) and the World Poultry Science Association – Sri Lanka Branch hosted the India-SriLanka Livestock meet in Colombo last week. The two day event on July 1 and 2 marked the formal beginning of an institutional dialogue between the two nations and set the stage for collaborative action in areas such as animal health, feed innovation, policy alignment, and knowledge exchange, a CLFMA release said.

Tamil Nadu, where it is locally known as murungai, leads moringa production and area in India. Moringa, native to India, has long been valued in various traditional practices for its versatility. Different parts of the plant, from seeds to roots, are used in food and folk remedies. It is said to be a source of vitamins, antioxidants, amino acids, and minerals. 'According to research, it contains seven times more Vitamin C than oranges, and 17 times more calcium than milk. These properties have sparked global interests especially in the wellness and natural health industries.'

India and the US are nearing a mini trade deal with politically and economically sensitive sectors of dairy and agriculture likely to be excluded from the pact, officials said. 'The deal is in its conclusion phase,' said an official. 'Most issues related to agri may be discussed later. As of now, they seem to be out of the ambit of this phase of the deal,' the official said, adding that the agreement could be announced in the next two days.
