Trade deal: India and US talk in Washington, duel in Geneva.
As Indian trade negotiators prepare for yet another round of discussions in Washington, an interesting duality continues to define the India-US trade relationship. Beyond Staples: India’s Export Future Lies in High-Value Agri Products.
For decades, India’s agricultural exports have been dominated by staples like rice and wheat. These crops have fed millions and driven export revenues, but as consumer preferences shift, climate pressures mount, and the need to earn more from every acre intensifies, India is being pushed toward a new frontier in agriculture. Recognizing this pivotal moment, the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), in partnership with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), has charted a bold new roadmap.

Are farmer producer organisations the future of India’s agriculture.
The Indian agricultural system suffers from low productivity and low incomes for farmers, impacting the lives of roughly 100 million small and marginal holder farmers (SMFs), resulting in low stability & predictability of livelihoods, as well as extreme vulnerability to external shocks. Policymakers started to realise that if the plight of the Indian SMFs is to be resolved, then the entire household-level farming system has to move from subsistence agriculture to market-facing agriculture. But the SMF had a negligible surplus and the skills and knowledge to produce for the market.
