BIRC 2025 opens up new avenues for India's rice exports, say farmers and FPO members.
The recently held Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) 2025 here in the national capital's Bharat Mandapam had brought together thousands of farmers, exporters, and buyers to showcase India's rich rice diversity and explore new global opportunities. It opened a window to the world for Indian farmers to exhibit and promote their rice varieties, of which many were GI varieties.

Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, undertook multiple high-level engagements aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, connectivity, and cultural exchanges between India and New Zealand on the second day of his official visit to New Zealand. Earlier in the day, en route to Rotorua, the Minister met CEO, Air New Zealand, Mr. Nikhil Ravishankar. Discussions focused on the airline’s role in enhancing regional and global connectivity. Shri Goyal highlighted India’s rapidly expanding aviation sector and underscored the significant opportunities it offers for strengthening collaboration in air services and tourism.

Talks with US on bilateral trade agreement going well: Piyush Goyal.
Commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal Wednesday said India and the US are continuing discussions to seal a proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) and that the talks are advancing smoothly. 'Talks are going well...and are continuously going on,' said Goyal. 'There are many sensitive issues, many serious issues, so it is natural that it will take some time,' the minister said when asked about the progress of negotiations for the trade deal.

India on way to become third largest economy: FM Sitharaman.
India today stands out as a fast-growing economy and will soon be the third-largest in the world, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Tuesday. Addressing students at the Delhi School of Economics here, she said, India stands distinctly on its feet because of its economic strength.

ISMA urges Centre to allow 2 million tonnes sugar exports as production seen rising 16% on bumper Maharashtra, Karnataka output.
Industry body Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers' Association (ISMA) has urged the central government to allow export of two million tonnes of sugar in 2025-26 as the industry body has projected an year-on-year increase of 16% in the gross domestic production driven by favourable weather conditions in Maharashtra and Karnataka. 'With a comfortable sugar balance, India is well-positioned to export nearly 20 lakh tons this season. We have strongly urged the government to announce the export policy at the earliest, so mills can proactively plan their raw and white sugar production strategies in advance,' said ISMA in a media release.

India-EU FTA talks intensify as EU negotiators arrive in New Delhi.
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, held a meeting with European Union (EU) Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Maros Sefcovic, to discuss the progress on India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and strengthen bilateral trade and investment relations. In a social media post, the minister stated, 'Had a productive meeting with @MarosSefcovic, EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, and @CHansenEU, Commissioner for Agriculture and Food. Discussed strengthening the India-EU trade & investment ties, advancing the FTA, and deepening cooperation across priority areas. The eighth meeting of the Joint Working Group (JWG), on Agriculture between India and the Netherlands was held at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi. The meeting was co-chaired by Priya Ranjan, joint secretary (Horticulture), Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Government of India, and Guido Landheer, Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, the Netherlands. Both sides exchanged views on the current priorities, challenges, and new initiatives in their respective agriculture sectors. Emphasising the significance of the JWG mechanism, both sides appreciated its role in deepening the longstanding cooperation in agriculture between the two countries.

India rapeseed plantings to hit record highs due to favourable weather, Chinese demand.
India's rapeseed planting is expected to hit a new high this year due to record Chinese buying of rapeseed meal and above-average rainfall that resulted in favourable soil moisture for the crop. As the country's primary winter-sown oilseed, the surge in rapeseed production is also poised to help India, the world's largest importer of edible oil, limit costly overseas purchases of cooking oils.

APEDA Facilitates First Export of Fortified Rice Kernel from Chhattisgarh to Costa Rica.
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, has facilitated the first export consignment of 12 metric tonnes of Fortified Rice Kernel (FRK) from Chhattisgarh to Costa Rica. This initiative aligns with the visionary programme of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, 'Kuposhan Mukt Bharat' (Malnutrition-Free India), being implemented under the Poshan Abhiyan, through which the Food Corporation of India (FCI) is distributing fortified rice across the country. The export of Fortified Rice Kernel marks a significant step in integrating India’s domestic nutrition mission with global outreach.

India won’t compromise on dairy, MSMEs in trade pacts, says Piyush Goyal after meeting New Zealand PM.
Commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday said India consistently protects the interests of vulnerable sectors such as dairy and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in its free trade agreements (FTA). He made the comments after his meeting with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and his counterpart Todd McClay to review the progress of the FTA negotiations, which were formally launched on March 16.
