India’s Exports Of Food Goods Jump 11 Pc To $17.8 Billion In April-Dec.
India’s exports of agricultural and processed food products registered a robust 11 per cent growth to $17.77 billion during April-December of the current financial year compared to the same period of the previous year, according to official figures. Data compiled by the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS) shows that rice exports in the first nine months of FY25 saw a sharp increase of over 19 per cent to $8.72 billion compared to $6.44 billion in the same period last fiscal.

Centre extends duty free imports of tur till March 2026.
The Centre on Tuesday extended duty free imports of tur or arhar by a year till March 2026 to temper retail food prices that are still ruling above the government’s comfort levels. The existing import policy was first introduced in May 2021 and extended several times till March 2025 amid faltering domestic production due to El Niño weather pattern. Government stocks also got exhausted for ensuring food security during the pandemic.

Changes sought by Oman after FTA talks minimal: Official.
After conclusion of negotiations on the free trade agreement (FTA), Oman’s request to reconsider some of the concessions that it had earlier conceded to is being discussed, a senior official said, adding that changes sought by Oman are minimal. Negotiations on FTA with Oman that started November 2023 were concluded in March 2024. The signing of the pact was expected to be completed before general elections in India last year, but the request for review from Oman delayed it.

From importing frozen French Fries to now exporting: how contract farming is a win-win for both agri industry, farmers.
In 1992, the American processed food company, Lamb Weston, began importing frozen French Fries (FF) for supplying to star hotels in India. The Canadian multinational McCain Foods followed four years later, as sole supplier to McDonald’s that had opened its first restaurant in the country.

After 31 months, government partially lifts restriction on sugar export.
The government on Monday partially lifted the 'restriction' on export of sugar after almost 31 months by permitting mills to ship 10 lakh tonnes for the 2024-25 season ending Sept, a move that will support the industry. However, nearly two dozen sugar mills have been barred from exporting their stockas they had violated rules by selling excess sugar in the domestic market than their allotted monthly quantity.

Govt Projects 2.5% Rise in Tur, 20% Surge in Kharif Moong, and Stable Onion Production for 2024-25.
Government is actively monitoring the prices and availability of essential food commodities to ensure affordability for consumers and maintain stable prices. Encouraged by favorable weather conditions and a good monsoon, the production of key crops such as pulses and onions is estimated to rise in 2024-25 compared to the previous year. Tur production is projected to increase by 2.5% to 35.02 LMT, while Kharif Moong production is estimated at 13.83 LMT, a notable 20% growth from the previous year. Similarly, Kharif and Rabi onion sowing has shown positive trends, ensuring better supply in the coming months.

India seventh largest coffee producer in the world: Government.
India is now the seventh-largest coffee producer globally with exports reaching $1.29 billion in FY24, almost double the $719.42 million in 2020-21, the commerce and industry ministry said Monday. In the first half of January 2025, India exported over 9,300 tonnes of coffee with top buyers including Italy, Belgium, and Russia.
