India and Russia agreed to boost trade ties on Thursday as their foreign ministers met in Moscow, giving little indication that U.S. President Donald Trump's hefty tariffs on India for buying Russian oil would disrupt their relations. Indian goods face additional U.S. tariffs of up to 50%, among the highest imposed by Washington, due to New Delhi's increased purchases of Russian oil.

The Food Corporation of India (FCI) has for the first time procured 2,642 metric tonne of finger millet, also known as Ragi, in Odisha this year, officials said. The FCI procured the millets for the central pool to be distributed through the public distribution system.

The Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has said that he would personally visit Karnataka, along with a team of scientists and experts, to review the situation on the ground and formulate a roadmap for the development of arecanut cultivation in the state. Chairing a high-level meeting on arecanut development in New Delhi on Thursday, he said arecanut is an important commercial crop that holds a significant place in India’s religious, social and cultural practices. Due to the presence of various alkaloids, it is also used in Ayurvedic and veterinary medicines.

Agriculture and rural development minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday exhorted officers of both the ministries to shun imported products and try to buy, as much as possible, goods produced in the country. Such a step will motivate many others to stick to Swadeshi products and help improve Indian economy, he added. The minister urged all employees and officers to adopt the Prime Minister’s call for using indigenous products, pledging maximum use of ‘Swadeshi’ to generate employment for the needy and strengthen the economy, the agriculture ministry said in a statement.

Indian importers for the first time bought palm oil from Colombia and Guatemala as producers sitting on surplus stocks offered cargoes at steep discounts, four trade sources with direct knowledge of the matter said. Indonesia and Malaysia dominate global palm oil supplies and are the main suppliers to India, which imported 9 million tons of palm oil in 2023/24. Colombia and Guatemala, the fourth- and sixth-largest producers of palm oil, usually export their surplus stocks to Europe and North America.

The incentives under the PLISFPI are admissible where the entire chain of manufacturing processes, including primary processing of the food products applied for coverage under the scheme takes place in India. Total export of agricultural processed food products of the applicants approved under PLISFPI has increased with a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 13.23% as on 2024-25 with reference to 2019-20. The scheme does not cover floricultural production.

In order to promote and ensure overall development of Food Processing Industries, Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has been incentivizing setting up/expansion of related infrastructure through its two Central Sector Schemes namely Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY) and Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industry (PLISFPI). MoFPI is also implementing a Centrally sponsored scheme namely PM Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme for providing financial, technical and business support for upgradation/ setting up of micro food processing enterprises.
