Kagga rice: Karnataka’s high-fibre coastal variety set for GI tag.
Karnataka's Kagga rice, a traditional saline-and flood-tolerant variety from Uttara Kannada, is on track to receive a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, potentially bringing it to the attention of fitness enthusiasts and health-conscious consumers. The state agriculture department has applied for GI certification and a farmers' producer organisation (FPO) will be formed to take over the process. 'A FPO will be formed under the guidance of the deputy commissioner of Uttara Kannada district,' said Manju Ajjampura, deputy director of agriculture. The University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, is providing scientific support for the process. Kagga rice, which grows up to 4.5 feet tall and therefore does not need scarecrows to deter bird attacks, is pest-resistant and comes in two varieties — Bili Kagga (white kernel) and Kari Kagga (black kernel).
