The Union cabinet has approved the Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana (PMDDKY), a scheme to develop 100 agricultural districts through the convergence of 36 schemes of 11 ministries. The scheme has an outlay of Rs.24,000 crore per year, said information and broadcasting minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, adding that it would be implemented for six years beginning with the current financial year. A master plan for implementation of PMDDKY, which will include agriculture and allied activities, will be drawn up for every district, he added.

The US asked New Delhi to slash average applied tariffs on American agriculture imports to 5% from the existing level of about 40%, with this likely to be one of the key issues of the four-day long trade deliberations set to start in Washington on Monday, people in the know said. The US wants parity in the average applied tariff for a mutually beneficial and long-lasting bilateral trade relationship, the people added, requesting anonymity . But accepting the US demand is difficult for New Delhi because Indian farmers, operating at the subsistence level, cannot withstand an unequal competition with American commercial farms, they said.

The Commerce Ministry on Tuesday said gherkins, pickled small cucumbers, have been exported from Tamil Nadu to the South American country Uruguay with the support of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). The consignment, it said, includes two major gherkin-based products - whole gherkins, used primarily as pickles, and sandwich slices, which serve as key ingredients in burgers, pizzas, and sandwiches.

The ongoing efforts to promote Wayanad's GI-tagged Robusta coffee has received a shot in the arm as the Wayanad coffee received a special mention in centre's one-district-one-product (ODOP) programme. Sharing the development, Wayanad MP and AICC top leader Priyanka Gandhi tweeted that it was a proud moment for Wayanad. It is the first such recognition for any product from Kerala.

India and the European Union (EU) will hold the next round of negotiations on the proposed free trade agreement (FTA) in September here as both sides have exchanged offers related to the services sectors last week, an official said on Tuesday. L Satya Srinivas, Special Secretary in the Department of Commerce, said the last (12th) round of talks concluded last week in Brussels.

India is closely monitoring potential tariff differentials compared to other countries as a result of US reciprocal tariffs, but any contingency planning can be done only after assessing the full impact of the duties, officials said. Until then, the government will remain in a wait-and-watch mode, they added. 'Today, on July 15, we are not in a position to guesstimate the differential tariff that is going to play out on August 1,' one of the officials said.

India and the United States have ‘almost’ finalised a mini trade deal after weeks of hectic and hard-fought negotiations, even as both sides continue to work on the larger free trade agreement that will be finalised later this year, ThePrint has learnt. Government sources told ThePrint that the mini trade deal will be announced soon by both countries, which will involve concessions on the critical issue of agriculture and dairy products by both sides.

Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited (TAFE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) to establish the ‘JFarm Adaptive Agriculture Research & Extension Centre’ at the ICRISAT campus in Hyderabad. TAFE inaugurated JFarm in 1964 as a CSR initiative to empower farmers through research-driven solutions and training. With expansions in Bhawanimandi (2016), and through public–private partnerships, JFarm established the ‘JFarm and Product Training Centre’ with PJTSAU, Telangana (2019) and the ‘JFarm and Mechanisation Centre’ with VNMKV, Maharashtra (2023).
