India and Canada on Monday unveiled a new roadmap for their relations aimed at restoring stability, trust and momentum in the bilateral partnership after a year of diplomatic turbulence. The announcement came following talks between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Canadian counterpart Anita Anand, who is on an official visit to India from October 12 to 14.

Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan chaired a high-level meeting today to review the progress of the agriculture sector. The meeting covered a comprehensive assessment of Kharif crop conditions, Rabi sowing preparedness, crop situation in flood-affected areas, price trends, fertiliser availability, and reservoir storage levels. The Union Minister also issued necessary directions to concerned officials during the meeting.

The fragrant, sweet and century-old Aroor Olor mango is on track to receive the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, with the government’s confirmation sparking optimism among farmers in Kozhikode’s Purameri region. Responding to a submission by Kuttiady MLA K P Kunhammad Kutty in the assembly recently, Agriculture Minister P Prasad confirmed that the necessary groundwork for the same had been done, with the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) having finalised its crucial study on Aroor mango’s unique characteristics.

India and the United States are moving steadily towards the conclusion of the first tranche of their Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), with both sides expressing optimism about sealing the deal by the fall deadline, government sources told on Monday. According to government officials, a high-level Indian trade delegation is set to travel to Washington this week for another round of negotiations aimed at resolving pending issues and finalising the initial segment of the agreement.

The Uttar Pradesh Government has approved 13 new projects under the UP Food Processing Policy. According to reports, the decision was taken during a meeting of the State-level Empowered Committee chaired by the Agricultural Production Commissioner recently in Lucknow. The proposal for 13 projects was passed after detailed discussions with the higher officials of the UP Government.

The Indian Food Ministry has estimated India’s gross sugar production for the current season, which began on October 1, at 34 million tonne (mt), which is lower than the nearly 35 mt estimated by the industry body, the Indian Sugar and Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA). The government is taking a cautious approach to permitting exports, weighed down by the lower-than-expected output, increased diversion toward ethanol, concerns over the next sugarcane crop, and a delayed start of sugar factories.

US ambassador-designate Sergio Gor on Sunday held talks with Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal on India-US economic ties with the two sides looking at ways to firm up a trade deal. Gor, accompanied by Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael J Rigas, is on a six-day visit, days after his appointment as the US envoy to India was confirmed by the Senate.
