The Philippines plans to broadly extend its ban on rice imports until April to support farmers in the world’s biggest buyer of the grain, a move that’s likely to put further pressure on global prices. The Southeast Asian nation will only allow inbound shipments for about a month in January, when it needs to bring in at least 300,000 tons of the grain from overseas, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. told lawmakers at a hearing at the House of Representatives on Monday. The restriction, which was supposed to last for just 60 days, started on Sept. 1.

Amidst the ongoing India and the US trade negotiations, in which agriculture is a point of contention, a team of the feed industry body Compound Livestock Feed Manufacturers Association (CLFMA) of India, visited the maize, sorghum and dairy industry from Iowa and Texas to study the feasibility of these feeds for the Indian industry, in case the country pens these imports in future. The delegation met with the officials from the United Sorghum Checkoff Program, Kansas State University, Clemson University, and the U.S. Grains Council. They also met the Governor and Agriculture Secretary of Iowa.

As the premiums for Indian coffee, especially the robustas have widened over the past several months, exporters are facing increased competition from other origins such as Uganda and Ethiopia. The differentials for Indian robusta parchment AB are currently hovering in the range of $1,200-1,300 per tonne over the LIFFE (London International Financial Futures Exchange) prices. In early January, the price differential was in the range of $800-900 per tonne.

China can import more from India if New Delhi is more open to Beijing and joins the regional free trade agreement, Liqing Zhang, director of Centre for International Finance Studies in Beijing, said on Sunday. India's potential entry into the RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership) could make its goods more competitive than others as the tariffs on manufactured goods within the block are set to fall to zero within a decade, Liqing told ET on the sidelines of Kautilya Economics Conclave (KEC).
